Overview
Indirect rates permit recovery of indirect costs not otherwise charged as direct. Sounds pretty simple.  However, it can be a challenging process that requires consideration from not only how an organization is structured and services or products it provides, but also from a regulatory standpoint. Once organizations establish indirect rates, it is not uncommon for that structure to be maintained for extended periods of time until some event requires it to change.  In addition, trying to compare indirect rates between different organizations is like comparing apples to oranges; organizations may have similar rate structures, but the cost accounting practices in developing rates differ.

This course will look at how indirect rates are developed, from understanding the basic cost accounting concepts to hands-on development of indirect rates utilizing financial data, and lots of learning in between. This course will look at the differences between overheads, general & administrative, service centers, and home office allocations and how organizational structures, lines of business, and contract requirements impact the options and structure of indirect rate pools and bases.  Along the way, we will also discuss how an organization’s chart of accounts and general accounting practices assist in this process.

**NOTE**
Attendees will need to bring a laptop with a working copy of Excel in order to complete classroom exercises.
